Eisteddfod, Tregaron, 30 July - 6 August
After a two year break, the Eisteddfod is back. I’m just thrilled that I have three pieces of work in the Y Lle Celf art pavilion, alongside lots of wonderful artists and makers. Below, you can read the statement that accompanies the works.
With reference to the Three Fates in Greek mythology, the symbolism of a thread as a metaphor for life is core to all of my work. Clotho spun the thread of life, Lachesis measured it and Atropos determined where it should be cut. This poetry of yarn offers a fundamental purity of line and depth of meaning.
The three handwoven artworks ‘Captured’ , ‘Void’ and ‘Inside’, represent a new direction my work has been taking since undertaking a Wales – India residency in Gujarat in 2018. The focus is on celebrating the inherent beauty and metaphor of the individual thread and to create interesting structures in which the thread is as ‘unwoven’ as possible whilst the resulting cloth remains stable. I employ unusual weave techniques such as leno and Spanish Lace to create openness, a ‘view through’ and glimpse of something beyond the surface.
