Many of you you will know that alongside my creative practice, I have been a BA Textiles degree lecturer at Carmarthen School of Art since 2004.

Usually at this time of year, we’d be finalising plans to take our graduates to New Designers in London to showcase their work. This year is different as we all well know.

Instead, we have been busy perfecting our virtual reality degree show which we are incredibly excited to share with you. For the first time ever, geography and time zones are no obstacle to enjoying the work of our talented graduates. Thanks to the innovation and tireless work of our colleagues in the BA 3D Design and Virtual Reality, BA Concept Art & Illustration and BA Photography departments, we have an exhibition that you can view from the comfort of your own home at your leisure.

The gallery contains over 1000 individual pieces of art and an astonishing 15,000 square foot of digital gallery space, which houses 180 higher and further education students from across the college.

Head of Carmarthen School of Art, Paula Phillips Davies said “This online gallery has provided a fabulous opportunity to be even more ambitious than ever; it will be the first time we will be able to showcase the work of all of our degrees and further education courses at the same time ‘under one roof’.”

Our art school is particularly well known for its personalised approach to teaching, learning and student support. Small class sizes ensure that learners flourish and develop skills of professionalism and resilience.

Textiles degree student Imogen Mills said “There was a sense of loss, from the abrupt end...but born of the grief was the chance to reconvene. Quiet, stillness and time created resilience and invention. The sense of community was not lost in these locked away days, daily driving us forward. This is our show. The culmination of extraordinary tenacity and the abundant adaptability of artists.”

Visitors can expect to see work from a full range of disciplines including ceramics and jewellery, digital illustration, fashion, painting, drawing and printmaking, graphics, photography, sculpture, textiles, mixed media, animation, video and multi-disciplinary work.

After the launch keep an eye on the department Facebook and Instagram channels for an exciting range of associated live events happening over the coming two weeks.

Please do join us and support our students in celebrating their remarkable achievements and next steps into a professional life within textiles.

You may also be interested to know that we have an online open day this 30th June. It's not too late to apply to join us this September. If you know anyone who might be keen to join our unique and truly innovative college, please register for the open day here, or drop us a line at any time for further information.

Lastly, regarding New Designers, we’re delighted to be able to confirm that our 2020 graduates will not miss their opportunity to exhibit in London. They will instead join our 2021 graduates to show there next year.
