How to commission a bespoke artwork

Much of the work I do is to commission. My artistic approach and the very nature of my work lends itself perfectly to making unique, bespoke works that the customer will know will never be repeated. A true ‘one-off’.

Work can made to fit a space perfectly, both in terms of size and colour palette. Naturally there are some practical constraints, but I pride myself on being an adept problem-solver, so can always think of a solution.

How does the commission process work?

We need to begin with a conversation, so drop me an email and we can arrange a telephone or Zoom call. The more information you can share about the potential project the better: any images and information about the intended artworks location can help me quickly contextualise and discuss appropriate design solutions.

From that initial conversation, we will agree the specifics of the brief, and then I can start to generate costing guidance and a draft project schedule. Once agreed, both parties will sign a commission agreement and the first payment of 50% of the project cost will be due. Once this is received, I will begin the design process and be able to purchase project materials and yarns.

Initial design ideas may be generated as digital or hand-painted designs, whichever is more appropriate. The very nature of a commission means there will be regular discussion and meetings with the client to ensure smooth progress. I welcome as much design and decision-making input in to the process as the client wishes to give. Sometimes there is free rein, other times the client needs to be highly involved and specific - either is fine! I can comfortably flex to both scenarios.

Once a design/s has been selected, we may need to then create samples before committing to the final artwork creation. There may be several samples to illustrate different material or colour choices to aid the client with their final design decisions.

Then we are into the final artwork creation. I aim to keep clients updated regularly regarding progress by sending photographs and emails. Once the artwork is completed, it is then shipped securely or sometimes the client may ask me to arrange installation which I’m happy to do. I have an outstanding artwork handler that I can call upon for this. The final balance payment is due upon receipt of the artwork.

What if I don’t know what I want design-wise - I just like your work?!

That’s fine! Some of us have super-clear ideas about these matters, others might just have an instinctive desire for a piece of work, but would prefer a different colour palette, or a larger size. I can help define the brief and discuss the options. I have a huge range of samples that we can use as a starting point for discussion. I enjoy supporting and guiding clients who are new to the commissioning process, so please don’t feel inhibited by this.

How much will it cost?

I have worked on commissions ranging from £200 to £25,000 in value - it all depends on what the brief is! I always provide a detailed and transparent quote clearly showing material, design, making and delivery costs and payment terms. If you’re curious, please get in touch. There is no commitment to proceed from that first stage scoping conversation, although I very much hope you’ll be excited by the possibilities!

What if I don’t like the final artwork?

I’m 99.9% sure that would never happen! You will be involved at every step of the commission when design decisions are made to allow us to proceed to the next stage. The resulting artwork should look and perform exactly as you expected. I am a total perfectionist with my work, so I can assure you that I would never knowingly deliver a flawed piece of work. If you are unhappy with any aspect of the artwork with valid reason, then I will do my utmost to resolve the problem. However, please remember that any commissioned artwork cannot be ‘returned’ as it has been made bespoke for you.

Can I commission an artwork exactly the same as one you’ve already made?

Many clients come to me having seen a piece of my work already and so want something of that ilk. I’m very happy to use previous work as a starting point, but would never make an exact duplicate. Colours may be tweaked a little, proportions changed, yarns more densely packed perhaps. You will be encouraged to embrace this process of having something uniquely made to meet your personal brief and I’m quite certain you’ll love the artwork even more as a result!
