‘Rooted in Practice’ Carmarthen School of Art staff exhibition, Craft in the Bay.

29th September - 4th November 2018.

My latest curation project for Craft in the Bay in Cardiff has been a wonderful opportunity to bring together two facets of my professional life. I’ve been a BA Textiles tutor at Camarthen School of Art since 2004, and a member of the Makers Guild in Wales which runs Craft in the Bay since 2005, and so it was a delight to bring work by my talented CSoA colleagues to the gallery. This exhibition is a development of an earlier show at the college curated by Amelia Kilvington, to celebrate the college being at its current Jobswell Road location for 40 years.

Exhibition statement:

Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gar has been providing art education since 1854, being one of the first Art Schools set up in Britain following the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace in London. The School has been continually evolving ever since, responding to social, creative and cultural developments and the changing needs of its students, industry and wider community.

Carmarthen School of Art has a national reputation for skill-based teaching & learning underpinned by academic rigour. Rooted in craft practice, specialist making skills are a focus in each department and as such students have the rare opportunity to become expert in iron casting, weaving, ceramics or jewellery to name but a few.

2018 marked the 40 year anniversary of the School being based at its current location on Jobs Well Road in Carmarthen. The occasion was celebrated with an exhibition of staff work highlighting the fact that all have notable personal careers which compliment and inform their academic practice. This exhibition at Craft in the Bay represents the ethos of both the School and the individual makers.
